Our approach

How We Support Health Organizations

Health organizations across Canada face a structural tension: rising demand, complex patient populations, workforce pressures, and constrained funding. Operational excellence through Lean and continuous improvement removes the waste that stops existing resources from being effective.

Our consultants bring deep health sector experience. We understand accreditation frameworks, patient safety requirements, union environments, and the realities of clinical workflow. We adapt proven improvement methods to healthcare environments, not the other way around.

Our work spans both consulting and training. Consulting engagements focus on building internal CI capability through diagnostic assessments, Kaizen events, and structured improvement programs. Our training programs, including sector-specific belt certification at White, Yellow, Green, and Black Belt levels, are designed specifically for health professionals.

We work at all levels of the health system: hospitals, public health units, long-term care homes, and community-based organizations. Each environment has different workflows, regulatory requirements, and labour contexts. Our team adapts accordingly, working alongside your staff in a way that respects clinical realities.

How it works

Our Approach to Health Sector Improvement

We begin every engagement with an assessment of your current state: either a structured OpsScan diagnostic across five maturity dimensions, or a targeted value stream mapping session on a specific process area. The starting point is understanding where value is being lost before recommending where to begin.

Improvement activity is co-designed with your clinical and operations staff. We do not arrive with a predetermined playbook. We bring the tools, structure, and facilitation expertise. Your team brings the process knowledge. This partnership model consistently produces improvements that stick because the people who run the process understand the changes.

After implementation, we remain engaged through a sustaining period that includes audits, coaching, and progress reviews. Improvement work often stalls when external support leaves. We structure every engagement to prevent this, including a defined handoff point where your internal champions can drive improvement independently.

Community Health

Community and Social Services

Community health centres, home care providers, and social service organizations face growing caseloads with limited administrative capacity. Lean streamlines intake, reduces duplication, and improves care coordination without adding headcount.

Since 2017, Leading Edge Associates has been the approved training partner for the Canadian Centre for Accreditation (CCA), delivering customized Lean quality improvement training for community health and social service organizations.

Public Health

Public Health Organizations

Public health units and agencies balance population-level programs, regulatory reporting, and community engagement with often-limited operational infrastructure. Lean improves program scheduling, eliminates reporting waste, and builds structured improvement capacity.

Leading Edge Associates is the approved training partner for the Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA), delivering Lean Sigma quality improvement programs at White, Yellow, Green, and Black Belt levels for public health professionals.

Maturity

Where Does Your Organization Stand?

Understanding your current CI maturity is the starting point for building a practical, achievable improvement roadmap.

0–1

Fire Fighting

Reacting to incidents and complaints. No structured improvement methodology in place.

1–2

Set-up Processes

Improvement awareness is growing. Early projects underway but inconsistent and ad hoc.

2–3

Execute Processes

Structured improvement activity in specific departments. Data collection starting to inform decisions.

3–4

Managed Reliance

Organization-wide CI program in place. Teams have improvement plans and accountability structures.

4–5

Self-Reliance

Continuous improvement is embedded at every level. It is simply how the organization operates.

Questions

Common Questions from Health Organizations

How does operational improvement consulting differ from general management consulting?

Operational improvement in health organizations uses structured methodologies: value stream mapping, standard work, Kaizen events, and 5S. Unlike general management consulting, the work is done alongside frontline staff and produces working process changes, not just recommendations. Our consultants bring both Lean methodology expertise and practical health sector operations knowledge.

What size health organization do you work with?

We work with organizations ranging from single-site community health centres and long-term care homes to multi-site regional health authorities and large teaching hospitals. Our engagement model scales accordingly. A smaller organization may need a targeted improvement project, while a larger system may engage us for a multi-year transformation program.

How long does a lean healthcare consulting engagement typically take?

A focused improvement project targeting a specific process area typically runs 8 to 12 weeks. A broader operational excellence program covering multiple departments or a full organization can extend to 12 to 18 months. We define scope and timeline collaboratively at the start of every engagement, so you know what to expect before work begins.

Can your team work in unionized healthcare environments?

Yes. Most of our healthcare clients operate under collective agreements, and we have extensive experience designing improvement work that engages union leadership and frontline staff constructively. We do not propose changes that bypass labour relations requirements. Our approach builds improvement capability within existing workplace frameworks.

Does lean healthcare consulting apply to clinical areas or just administration?

Both. We work in clinical areas including emergency departments, operating rooms, inpatient units, outpatient clinics, and pharmacy. We also work in administrative and support functions including scheduling, health records, supply chain, facilities, and finance. The tools adapt to the environment; the discipline of identifying and removing waste applies across the organization.
